Henry set for two-month loan

Arsenal’s record goalscorer Thierry Henry has been offered the chance to return to the Gunners on a two-month loan deal, according to widespread press reports on Thursday evening.

New York Red Bulls striker Henry, 34, has been training with Arsenal since the MLS season ended in November, and Arsene Wenger is keen to bring in the Frenchman as cover for Marouane Chamakh and Gervinho who will be heading to the African Cup of Nations next month.

Henry, who is expected to sign the contract in the next 48 hours, could feature in seven Premier League games, as well as FA Cup ties and the Champions League last-16 match with AC Milan. He would return to the USA on March 10 ahead of the new MLS season.

LA Galaxy striker Landon Donovan agreed a similar deal with Everton earlier this month, and he will also return to one of his former clubs.

Defender Per Mertesacker has backed a move for Henry.

“Henry has a lot of experience and he is a great opportunity for us, but I am not the manager and I do not know what is possible, for him or for us,” Mertesacker said. “In training, Henry shows his class and [it is good] to have him with us. He still has the same attitude he showed in a lot of games at Arsenal.”
