Mariners held by Gold Coast

A-League leaders Central Coast Mariners saw their six-match winning streak come to an end as they were held to a surprise goalless draw at home by rock-bottom Gold Coast United.

Despite the draw, Central Coast still boast a three-point lead at the top of the standings above second-placed Melbourne Heart, who defeated Sydney 4-0 on Thursday.

Third-placed Brisbane Roar finally ended their miserable recent run of form with a 3-1 home win over Melbourne Victory.

Brisbane came into the game on the back of a five-match losing streak – having previously been unbeaten for over a year – and it looked set to be another day of disappointment as they fell behind after just three minutes to a Harry Kewell goal.

However, three goals in nine minutes either side of half-time from Mitch Nichols, Rocky Visconte and Ivan Franjic turned the game around and earned the defending champions a much-welcomed win.

In the day’s other game, Newcastle Jets drew 1-1 at home with ten-man Perth Glory.

Perth took the lead after just eight minutes through Billy Mehmet but he was then sent off in the 33rd minute and Newcastle took advantage to claim a point through substitute Francis Jeffers’ 62nd-minute equaliser.
