Weiss leaves Slovakia role

The Slovak Football Association has confirmed that national team coach Vladimir Weiss is leaving the job.

A brief statement on the organisation’s official website revealed that Weiss’ contract, which was due to expire in 2014, has been terminated.

It read: “[SFA president] Jan Kovacik and Vladimir Weiss have signed an agreement to terminate the contractual relationship.”

Weiss, 47, took charge of the national team in June 2008 and led the team to the second round of the World Cup two years ago. However, he was unable to earn qualification for this summer’s European Championship.

Despite a win in Russia and two draws against fellow qualifiers Republic of Ireland, Slovakia finished fourth in the group, with a pair of defeats against Armenia proving costly.
