Dor Micha struck in the 44th minute to maintain Maccabi Tel Aviv’s long unbeaten record in continental competition at the Bloomfield Stadium with a 1-1 draw against Dynamo Kiev.
Unbeaten at home in Europe since 2005, the Israelis’ reign was tested by Dynamo – unbeaten in their opening 11 games of the Ukrainian Premier League season – when Ideye Brown fired them into a ninth minute lead.
Andriy Shevchenko started for Kiev on his 35th birthday while Serbian Ognjen Vukojevic, who scored a late equaliser in his side’s opening Group E clash with Stoke, was passed fit to play.
It was the home side who started strongly with Munas Dabbur firing over the bar after just 26 seconds and Yoav Ziv also threatening from a free-kick after a foul by Denys Garmash.
But the visitors grabbed the lead against the run of play when Shevchenko’s cross from the right flank found Nigerian Brown who slotted the opener home to the right of Haimov.
The Israeli side launched an immediate response, Dor Micha hitting the bar within two minutes of the goal then Haris Medunjanin bringing a comfortable save out of Kiev keeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy.
Roberto Colautti blasted an acrobatic overhead kick just wide and Dabbur brought a save out of Shovkovskiy before Tel Aviv pressure finally told with Dor Micha firing a 20-yard effort into the top corner of the net one minute before the break.
The home side began the second half brightly, with Moshe Lugasi and Munas Dabbur both coming close, while for Kiev Oleksandr Aliev dipped an attempted lob just over the bar.
Shovkovskiy saved from Ziv and Colautti flashed an effort wide as the home side looked much the more likely to go on and keep their proud unbeaten home record intact.
It was all Tel Aviv, with Shovkovskiy parrying a curling free-kick from Medunjanin on 74 minutes and Lugasi firing over the bar. Meanwhile Shevchenko sent a rare chance for Kiev skywards as both sides had to settle for a point.
